Tips for a better eBook reading experience - by Christina Pomoni ...

The concept of eBooks is really brilliant. They have significantly lower manufacturing and distribution costs, use considerably less resources for their production and are so easy to carry around. In reality, eBooks have changed the nature of printing and publishing, featuring a streamline of innovative ways of presenting, marketing and distributing content.

On the other hand though, eBook readers can give you a real headache. Being in front of a tiny screen for 4-5 hours at a time, reading an eBook in a PDF or EPUB format is not the best deal for your eyes.

Here are some tips that can help you improve your eBook reading experience:

a)      Try many different eBook readers

There are several eBook readers currently available on the market featuring different operating system, screen resolution, design, supported file formats and memory characteristics. Therefore, it is highly unlikely not to find one that can satisfy your reading needs. Amazon’s Kindle 2 and Kindle DX, Nook by Barnes & Noble, and Sony Reader are some of the most popular eBook readers, but there are also others that you could check. You may also download several eBook readers on your PC and see which one is better for you. Some people cannot read on eBook readers lying flat out on the sofa. They tend to sit up straight on their desks. So, if you are on of them, check out downloadable eBook readers.

b)      Adjust the settings

Some people claim that digital technology cannot improve the experience of reading because hardbound books have larger fonts and are easier on the eyes. However, eBook readers allow you to enlarge the text and choose the font style that suits you better. Typically, eBooks have medium fonts, but you can go as big as you as you want. You may also reverse the contrast to white on black text for reading at night without feeling your eyes bleeding. Besides, you can adjust the screen brightness aiming for the minimum levels to avoid headache or eye soreness.

c)      Take a relaxed body posture

One of the numerous advantages of an eBook reader is that it can be carried around easily. Imagine having to carry a 600-pages book in the plane or to the beach. It would be quite unpleasant. Therefore, treat your eBook reader as you would have treated a hardbound book. Take a relaxed body posture and enjoy your eBook after having adjusted the settings to avoid tiring your eyes. Enjoy reading like a natural activity, like holding a real book in your hands.

Overall, if you have never used an eBook reader before, you may be overwhelmed the first time you use one. However, time after time, you will see that if you adjust it to the format you like, it can be an exhilarating experience. If you need larger fonts, make them larger. If you need less light, adjust brightness. Make your eBook your best friend and, provided you take some screen breaks, everything will go just fine!
